What We AccomplishThe unprecedented success we achieve for our clients directly benefits their communities.TRANSPORTATIONAuthorizations:The Tomhave Group got $70 million of new tribal bridge and $45 million of new tribal transit programs authorized through the last Federal Highway law known as SAFETEA-LU. We got five road projects on the Navajo Nation designated High Priority Projects in SAFETEA-LU, which resulted in $9,420,000 being authorized for their construction. Appropriations:Accomplished a legislative first for the Navajo Nation by getting $4 million in road construction funding through transportation earmarks included in the Omnibus Appropriation Act for Fiscal Year 2004. Secured $1.6 million for Navajo Nation road projects in the Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations Bill to help build bridges and improve school bus routes. Garnered $3,267,000 in congressional earmarks for road projects within the Navajo Nation and San Juan County, Utah through the Fiscal Year 2006 Transportation Appropriation Bill. Achieved a $500,000 special appropriation in the Fiscal Year 2008 federal spending bill to build a new bridge at Halchita on the Navajo Reservation. JUSTICESustainable Funding Strategies:Developed recommendations on how to leverage multi-jurisdictional resources for tribal participants in U.S. Department of Justice Weed and Seed Program. TELECOMMUNICATIONSDeveloped tribal component of the Rural Wireless Initiative - a joint effort between the Federal Communication Commission and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development Agency. HEALTHConflict Resolution:Engineered community support and government investment in a Public Health Assessment to address the Cahto tribe’s concerns about possible environmental and health risks on the Laytonville Rancheria. Negotiated federal government’s replacement of deficient bulk fuel storage facility for the Native Village of Ouzinkie that threatened the health and environment of the community. Meeting Facilitation:Planned, organized and facilitated first national meeting of state, tribal and nonprofit partners to promulgate federal policy recommendations that the Tomhave Group got included in the the Ryan White CARE Act reauthorization. Organized tribal outreach and partnership development for the National Association of County Officials on county road projects in Indian Country. Legislative Advocacy:Identified legislative opportunity, wrote bill language, and created national coalition to support American Indians and Alaska Natives with HIV/AIDS to access federally funded care and treatment. Successfully commissioned a report by the Government Accountability Office on the Prevalence of HIV/AIDS among Native Americans and got new tribal provisions included in the reauthorization of the Ryan White CARE Act to authorize the Indian Health Service to be an eligible recipient of federal funds for HIV/AIDS treatment. Designed legislative strategy and developed national coalition to lobby for the protection of Indian land and natural resources in the National Energy Policy Act. LEADERSHIP TRAININGHosted Indian Women Leaders seminar aboard the Presidential Yacht Sequoia. Convened intimate round table discussion between tribal elected officials and that federal insiders. Senior Staff from Congress and the Administration shared their insights about ways tribes can penetrate and profit from the federal decision making process. Provided media training.
